As we journey through life, we often grapple with profound questions like, “What is life’s purpose?” Is it something given to us, or is it something we create ourselves? If it is given, how equitably is it distributed? And if we are to create it, who do we create it with, and how? At 46, I’ve discovered that wisdom and eloquence are not final destinations but ongoing adventures. Every day brings new lessons from life. This realization has led me to explore the importance of mindfulness for achieving true wellness—a balance of body, spirit, and mind.
Finding Balance and Connection
In our quest for physical and spiritual health, we sometimes neglect our mental well-being. Mindfulness is a practice that helps us manage stress and find clarity amidst life’s chaos. By integrating mindfulness into our daily routines, we can achieve a more harmonious balance among our mental, physical, and spiritual health.
Personal Reflection
This blog is inspired by my best friend, whose meticulous planning and journaling I initially found overwhelming. She often says that journaling clears the path for life—a notion I didn’t fully appreciate until recently. My super-wise friend (don’t tell her I said so) once mentioned that therapy helps us unpack our thoughts, while counseling provides advice on the way forward. She noted that many people seek counseling without first unpacking their thoughts. I used to smile and think, “This my ‘oyibo’ friend.” But she was right! We often carry traumas we’re not even aware of, remaining stuck in the past while a bright future awaits. Despite our different approaches, her support has encouraged me to embrace mindfulness and journaling. Those journals she’s gifted me over the years are now finding their purpose. Her consistent encouragement has underscored the value of pursuing mindfulness and sharing these experiences with you. She believes I have a unique perspective, and I’m beginning to see that myself. So, am I the only weirdo around? 😂
Mindfulness in Daily Life
Here’s a simple mindfulness exercise you can try:
- Gratitude Journaling:
- Find a Quiet Space: Light a candle or use an electric diffuser to create a calming atmosphere. Play classical music to enhance relaxation.
- Reflect on Your Day: Identify three things you’re grateful for, whether big or small.
- Write It Down: Record each item with a brief explanation of why you’re grateful. This practice helps shift your focus to the positive aspects of life.
- Read and Reflect: Regularly review your entries to remind yourself of the positives and cultivate a sense of gratitude.
Personal Anecdote: During particularly challenging weeks, I use my gratitude journal (yes, I’m just starting!😀) to focus on small victories and moments of joy. This practice has shifted my perspective from stress to appreciation, making me feel more grounded and positive. Life is about valuing small moments and finding beauty in them, rather than only chasing big achievements.
